Rukanga Makutano Water and Sanitation PLC (RUMAWASCO) is a licensed Water Service Provider (WSP) dedicated to providing quality, affordable, reliable and sustainable water and sanitation services within its designated service area in Kirinyaga County. The Company operates under the regulatory supervision of the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) and the oversight of the County Government of Kirinyaga.
Established as a community water project in 1989 through funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Government of Kenya and the Rukanga community, RUMAWASCO has grown into a professionally managed public utility committed to improving the quality of life through dependable water and sanitation services.
Following the enactment of the Water Act 2002, RUMAWASCO was incorporated as a Company Limited by Shares on 16th May 2008 under the Companies Act (Cap 486) and continues to operate in accordance with the Water Act 2016. Today, the Company serves approximately 15,000 residents across a service area of about 75 square kilometres within Mwea West Sub-County, covering Makutano Location and Rukanga Sub-Location.
RUMAWASCO is mandated to provide efficient and sustainable water and sanitation services within its licensed service area. In line with the Water Act 2016, the Company is responsible for the provision of water services and the development of county water service assets to ensure reliable, equitable and sustainable access to clean water and improved sanitation.
